21 September - Victorville to Los Angeles Airport: 115 miles
Last day in the saddle. Very sad.
85 mile rip up the I10 from Victorville to to Santa Monica Pier. Up a little later this morning as the Bear wants to miss the rush hour traffic so no "Mount up!" until 09:00. Actually a rather welcome lie in cos I'm feeling very tired.
Views over Cajon Pass stunning, but we were flying to keep up with and out of traffic so little concentration to spare. Just felt like a Monday morning commute up the M3 but without the filtering. Loads of traffic and the lane lines seemed to meander on a journey of their own that seemed to bear no relationship with the actual road. Real riding. Having to keep your wits about you. Like it.
After 2642 miles I'm afraid to say the Pier was a little of a disappointment. But that was probably more of reaching the end of the road than the the Pier.
Lots of pictures taken at the end of Santa Monica Boulevard. And lots of shopping, they have souvenir shops!
Lunch was at Bubba Gump's on the pier. Wasn't that impressed. Fish was overcooked, but then, I'm not really a fish person.
Handed bikes back at Bartel's Hog shop. Last minute shopping in their souvenir shop. Is this the last souvenir shop of the trip? Job done. Although it was a most comfortable bike to sit on, never got off it aching even after the 10 hour days, it rode like a tractor. Triumph Thunderbird for me I think.
Farewell dinner in the LAX Radisson hotel was very nice. Nice speeches by Bear and Zack and also Stuart. Each rider received certificates of completion, a map and a picture of the group which was a nice touch. Then it was hugs all round.
We've done it! We've ridden Route 66 on a Harley and have the teeshirts to prove it. Can't we just turn around and do it all again? I know I'm tired but could ride forever.
Bed early cos flight early tomorrow.
